June 2017 Extra Income-$3,477.30

Where things stand July 1:

Debt: The “only” debt I have today is a mortgage, a lawyer bill and our current renovation debt-total of the reno debt will be disclosed soon. Right now both the renovation and lawyer debt are on 0% interest cards. I pay the lawyer debt monthly and the renovation debt will eventually be consolidated on a HELOC.

The lawyer finally cashed my check! I have already made one payment on it and will have it completely paid off before the promotional rate is over.

Savings didn’t go up as much as I wanted. I wanted to put a large sum into savings last month, but had to wait to make the deposit until I got my rent check because I wanted to make sure I had enough money in my account to pay a large credit card bill. I was able to deposit the check yesterday, so look out for some bigger progress next month!

June 1 July1 Difference
Savings $4,085.17 $4,288.96 203.79
Lawyer Debt $2,552.34 $2,302.34 -250

We’re 2.786% of the way to our ultimate goal of $150,000, 17.16% of the way to our first rental property down payment goal of $25,000.

June Extra Income

$1,530-Rental property

$1,479- Airbnb

$224.98 – Mystery shopping

$125 –Swagbucks gift cards

$80.68- Selling books

$16.85- Dividends

$11- Credit card cash back redemption

$7.25- Saving Star redemption

$1.79- Interest on savings account

$0.75 – Affiliate income

Total: $3,477.30

Rental property: 1/3 goes towards property taxes, income taxes and insurance.  1/3 goes to my IRA. Ideally the last third will go to savings, but this month half of it went toward the lawyer bill and the other half went toward paying the minimum on the renovation credit cards.

AirBnb: We had one week long stay that really boosted our earnings, and then we kept getting requests! I did turn down one request-Mr. Beach Life had been out of town taking care of his granny, and I didn’t want to be super rushed cleaning the space for the new guests.

Mystery shopping: Of the $224.98, $146.98 was reimbursements.  For that $146.98, Mr. BL and I got:

  • A dinner at a steakhouse
  • 10 grocery trips
  • A almond milk latte

The web and phone shops have dried up and being gone weekends for Granny has cut into the grocery mystery shops. I am contemplating going to a neighboring town this weekend and doing a slew of mystery shops, but I am hesitant since it will take so much time. I know I need to get back into it because I could use the money (and groceries!) but I am also lazy.

Swagbucks: I cashed in some of my Swagbucks for a $25 gift card to Sam’s Club and two $50 gift cards to Groupon. One of the Groupons is for a local steak house that is delicious! It’s good for $65 worth of food and drink for 2-which should mean not a lot out of pocket for Mr. Beach Life and I. The second Groupon will go towards a Wine and Canvas night with my friend.

Selling Books: I sold 3 books last month that were all free to me! Doesn’t get better than that!

Credit Card Cash Back: I used the cash back points I’ve accumulated to lower the monthly balance.

Saving Star– I finally redeemed a rebate that pushed me over the $5 payout threshold. I really like the “buy one or many” option-it is particularly great when you purchase the item at Sam’s Club!

Dividends & savings account interest: I only own shares in 3 different companies but hope to eventually increase my holdings. Right now everything gets reinvested.

Affiliate Income– Not much to see here…

Looking forward to July:

We were supposed to finish the renovation last month, but Granny went into the hospital the weekend Mr. BL’s stepdad was planning on coming up to help us. Hopefully we will schedule a weekend where he can come up soon, and get this baby finished!

The biggest news we have is that our family is growing!

We now have two doggos to love and spoil and walk every two hours. Lilbit (aka Richard Nixon) was Granny’s dog and Sonny (aka Teddy Roosevelt) was her husband’s. We have some work to do to make the house more comfortable for them-starting with fencing in the yard. Someone from Lowes is coming this afternoon to give us a free estimate, but it will likely be way more than I want to pay. We will do it, though, because the dogs need outside time without us.

Mr. BL also inherited a lot of furniture from Granny. Apparently Granny thought we lived on crates and slept on the floor because she told several people how much Mr. BL NEEDS furniture. We’re going to have to arrange for a bedroom suite and a living room full of furniture to make it back to our place. But before we transport it all here, we’re going to paint our living room and bedroom. It will help with the appraisal when we go for the HELOC.

I don’t know if all of that will be accomplished in July, but we will try our best!

Quarter 2 Recap

My goals for Quarter 2 were to save $4,500 to bring my total savings to $8,400; save an additional $984 and to pay off the Reno Card (for the basement renovation.)

Total Savings: $4,288.96 ($4,111.04 below my goal)

Extra savings: $0

But! I did pay the renovation credit card off in April! So at least I accomplished one big goal!

Truthfully, with the addition of the puppers and the fence, it is highly unlikely that I will make my end of year goal. It is kind of a bummer to think about, but I am trying to be realistic. I am going to continue with the bank account bonuses (another one should hit this month) and be better at actively look for ways to reduce expenses. I will count it as a success if I end up only a quarter behind schedule.

Great job with the extra income! Don’t beat yourself up about not meeting your numbers. Life happens. And your doggos are so stinkin’ cute!!!

On the one hand, you may be a bit delayed in reaching your goals. On the other hand… DOGS!! 😀 😀

I’ve got puppy fever so badly after all my Rover guests… That’s good that you’re taking them, though, that they’re staying in the family and will have lots of love. Do they get along with the cats?

The cats have finally become friends with each other because they now have a common enemy. Sonny likes to woof at the cats and has chased one of them, but the cats are slowly coming around. The dogs are 12 and 13 years old, so they’re mostly interested in sleeping and eating. I think once the cats (who have never met a dog before) get over the strangeness of it they will start to be friends. Or ignore each other completely.

Awww, dogs!! Don’t be too hard on yourself for not making your goals (yet! maybe!) Honestly, it sounds like you’re doing well and enjoying life (free trips out, that’s awesome!) How do you get so many great mystery shopping opportunities? The only mystery opps I get are for oil changes, and I’m like, my car does not need an oil change every month! Haha 🙂

I found you from #finsavsat, by the way! So cool to see your journey – we’re also planning on saving up for a down payment on a rental home, so it’s great to see how you budget and are planning for that. Thank you!

Oh, enjoy your new puppies. Very cute.

I’m always impressed by your extra income. You do a lot of stuff, and it’s neat to see how it adds up and contributes to your goals.

Thanks! Mr. Beach Life thought I was a huge nerd for making the announcement, but furbabies are the only babies I will have!

  6. Amanda

But pupperinos are priceless! Congrats on expanding the family:) I have two dogs and I don’t even flinch at care costs because they enrich my life so much. I would be lost without them.

Our animals bring us such joy in life and I will happily spend to make sure their quality of life is high.

Your extra income is awesome! I feel like the theme of 2017 is two steps forward 1.75 steps back :oP I keep reminding myself it’s still progress.

Very cute dogs, but I suspect they are like kids in that they tend to interfere with finanicial goals.
