New Year, New House

No, we are not undergoing another renovation. Nor did I buy a new house. Mr. Beach Life and I are ending our relationship and I am signing a lease on a new place on Thursday. At risk of sounding like a cliche celebrity break up announcement- no one hates each other, no one did anything wrong, it just isn’t working and we’ll be happier as friends. That’s all I am going to say about that aspect, since it is not just my life that is affected by this decision.

So, I am moving into my own place this weekend and I am excited. Let me tell you what a hassle it was to find a place that will allow me to have the two dogs and a cat. Actually, I will tell you. In detail. Hopefully that post will be ready on Wednesday.

Mr. BL (gotta find a new name for him now, don’t I?) still have a lot of work to do on the house we own together. We need to finish sanding and painting the trim in the bathroom, hire someone to do the tiling in the kitchen and the bathroom and fix up the yard. Something else we might do is replace the flooring in the Airbnb space since the carpet is gross now. And then add laminate flooring in our part of the basement and the stairs leading to the main floor. It will cost more money than not doing anything, but will hopefully help with the appraisal.

After our renovation is FINALLY complete, we will get the house appraised. We both hope this is enough equity in the house for me to buy Mr. BL out. But then he will continue renting the house from me until he decides to stop. There is more to it than that, but again it is not just my life and I want to be respectful of other people’s privacy while still being transparent with what’s going on with me.

While Mr. BL is renting the house, the Airbnb money will go to him. So you won’t see that on my Extra Income Reports for awhile. Once I move back into the house I will continue the Airbnb.

2018 is going to be a rebuilding year for me, financially. As should be expected, I have had a ton of extra spending this week. Some of it justified (rental deposit), some it of not completely necessary (bottles of wine, eating out.)  I will definitely continue my debt updates, but this month will see a major set back. I am excited for a new beginning, and for life to calm down so that I can focus all of my effort into getting back into a better financial position.

Expect to see a lot more of me around after this week!

    Hey Jax,

Again, I’m sorry to hear about the BeachLife breakup — but I am excited for you as you embark on your new life. Having been in a long term relationship (read: married) and been single I’m here to tell you that it is easier to get your financial house in order when you are single. You only have yourself to worry about and there is no discussion on how to go forward — you make the best decision for yourself and implement it.

Stay strong, keep your goals in focus, and move forward. Here’s to 2018 being an excellent year for all!

I’m sorry to hear about the break-up but am glad for you that it seems amicable and you have made reasonable arrangements. We’ll be happy to have more of your company as you work things out 🙂

I’m sorry to hear that, although it sounds like the best it can be under the circumstances! Life is full of twists and turns. Second Sandy above that money is so much simpler as a single. A rebuilding year will be a great thing and we’re here for youn<3
